I hope your summer was restful.

I enjoyed much solitude, reflection, and slowing down for two months. Some of the time was easy and some quite difficult, because my mind tends to mess with me when I gear down. Regardless, I choose to rest and lay fallow periodically and pay attention, be alert to the roles I find myself in. Like many of my coaching clients I have numerous interests, and can get side-tracked from what is most important to me. Then I become unconscious and suffer.

I am glad to once again be in commune with the 1,000+ people who read Be the Change. Each month readers write me, to say that the E-zine’s content is speaking directly to them. My writing draws upon real people and real experiences which I re-create into new forms in my imagination. When I write, I give my attention to two things, and two things only. Initially, I ask myself if I have written an honest sentence. Then I ask myself if the sentence goes in easy. Does it give the reader the space to be with their own story… the thoughts, feelings, sensations, images and impulses of human experience. If a person finds that the writing sounds like I’m writing about them, then I have accomplished my goal.

Warmly,
Sean Casey LeClaire

ROLES

Recently I caught myself in a role.

Friends, who I call keepers of broken wings, were involved in the role playing with me. If I go to their home with a broken wing, then everything goes well. I moan and whimper and they hold me close, patch me up and I feel a little better, until the next time. But if I go to visit them with working wings and all’s okay with my life, then they become uneasy, uncomfortable and appear to not know how to relate with me. They do not appear aware of the fact that they play the role of keepers of broken wings. I am aware that I am playing the role of a man with a broken wing. Awareness is fundamental. I must be aware of the role I am in, while I am in a role, because this allows me to choose more carefully and honestly what role I really want to play. You can substitute the word role for the word identity and that works too.

A colleague of mine from the acting profession often reminds me, “That it’s all theatre, brother!” In yoga, the Sanskrit word Lila translates as amusement, and refers to the Divine Play of matter and consciousness. So given Parashiva is playing all the roles, including God, it is the least I can do, to increase my awareness of what role I am playing in any given circumstance. Or that Shiva is playing through me, if you get the inference.

All the roles we play can keep us in our cages.

If we consciously choose a role or identity, then we are free because we know that the role we are playing is not who we really are. Of late, I’ve noticed that my wings are no longer broken and so I choose to no longer play my old role. And I do not visit my “keepers of broken wings” friends as much. So they drove to my house to tell me that I had broken wings. They felt better when they left. Presently I am floating in an updraft over three lovely willows and a slow-moving creek. I admit my wings get sore navigating certain currents, and from up here, I can see other free birds flying about on working wings. I think I will fly over and introduce my Self.

POEM

A Ritual to Read to Each Other

If you don’t know the kind of person I am
and I don’t know the kind of person you are
a pattern that others made may prevail in the world
and following the wrong god home we may miss our star.

For there is many a small betrayal in the mind,
a shrug that lets the fragile sequence break
sending with shouts the horrible errors of childhood
storming out to play through the broken dike.

And as elephants parade holding each elephant’s tail,
But if one wanders the circus won’t find the park,
I call it cruel and maybe the root of all cruelty
to know what occurs and not recognize the fact.

And so I appeal to a voice, to something shadowy,
a remote important region in all who talk:
though we could fool each other, we should consider—
lest the parade of our mutual life get lost in the dark.
