Working with a group of courageous men this past weekend and performing my one-man show HUG for the first time, I was reminded of how deeply we all desire connection to something greater than ourselves and with each other. Despite this truth, it is often difficult to choose love over fear while in the daily heat of our respective trials and tribulations. Perhaps, if we could take the perspective that each and every person, place, and thing is actually a gift sent from beyond to support our growth, then we could see how life supports us in all situations.

Last year, after leading a men’s retreat, a man, not in the workshop, attacked me violently, so much so, that two police officers had to invite him to leave the building. I responded with love to the man. And had a good laugh, afterwards, at how God saw fit to test me, so soon after the beauty, gentleness and deep connection of the workshop. This year, Spirit gave me a few more hours before sending me another gift—a struggle with my ex-wife about access to my son and scheduling. I didn’t manage my mind as well as I would have liked.

Our souls have one eye lost in an eternal contemplation of an infinite glory and the other eye immersed in the muck and beauty of the world. It is hard at times for my mind to see that the soul and the infinite glory are one. The ancient teachings from India , the Upanishads, tell us that “There is only One, The Sages call it by many names.” I keep working at understanding and experiencing this timeless truth through mediation, loving service, being gentle with myself, engaging supportive and honest friends, body-centered breaks (BCBs), life-affirming practices, teaching and coaching, writing/performing, raising my son, and rest and renewal.

LIFE COACHING

What constitutes success in coaching work?

That’s tough question. A lot of the work I do with clients involves the development of awareness, will, and the capacity to enjoy being in a body. People who come to me for coaching want an increased and deeper sense of fulfillment and balance in their lives. This takes commitment and courage and the ability to choose new life-affirming ways of managing their minds.

Inevitably, it means clients are going to disturb some of what is comfortable in their lives… draining mental habits and the accompanying behavior, safe and often unfruitful relationships that hold them back from living the life they want; often clients must face fear during the change that occurs with the life coaching process. From observing my mind and my clients’ lives, I’ve come to see fear as a lot like the internet—a thousand miles wide and about two inches deep—whereas, the depth of love is infinite.

In the coaching conversation, I engage people with one principle—love or fear, you choose. If a person can consistently choose love over fear and learn to self-observe they can create significant and successful lives.

Lives with passionate purpose!

Before I slow down for summer, here are some of the coaching successes I’ve had the privilege to observe and support this past year… A hard-charging attorney graduate from coaching training and make a deep commitment to being and awareness. Another attorney see she can live naturally and choose not to work with insane clients, a biologist take his family to Australia for a year’s adventure in a different culture. A highly-gifted woman write and share a powerful story about 9/11 and what’s going on beyond our limited mental perceptions. A business leader open to awareness and show up in the corporate world as the man he truly is… he’s also bringing me into his organization to facilitate an awareness training, trust-building workshop for his corporate team. A successful management consultant choose to go on a well-deserved sabbatical and collaborate with me on the facilitation of a UU Church men’s spiritual retreat this fall. A lovely designer slow down and choose what is most important to her. A woman who came to coaching with a desire for relationship and found love. A high-tech executive experience that he can meditate and manage his mind/emotions. Another high-tech executive look at his relationship to alcohol and increase genuine intimacy in his marriage. Another client start going to a 12-step support group and flourish in their avocation as an artist.

The life coaching work I offer supports people to enthusiastically live their own lives, without apology! It’s a blessing to earn a living doing the coaching work. I’m signing off for summer with a quote that I so enjoy… Schopenhauer said “much of our lives seem like chaos but when you look back, you see that it is a plot!”

This summer, remember, you’re being written!

Play your part fully!

POEM

The Intellect

Desire fires
Impulse surfaces
Infuses itself inside
Sensation shaping
Feeling forming
Thought...
And we think we are our thoughts!
New Englanders are a considered people—
A land thick with thinking thoughts.
Go ahead!
Hone that intellect.
In the end, all you will have is a sharper
Problem.
